The thesis - architectural interventions on sites condemned by infrastructure and other obstacles. The chosen site to intervene was the West End circle on the west side of Pittsburgh. This building serves as an exercise on designing with steep topography. It rests on the south slope of a hill, a parcel located on the north part of the site. The lower level is dedicated to a business tenant and the upper levels are apartments. The primary facade seeks to fit in with other buildings in the West End Village, while a screen is held in front of it, mitigating sunlight and highway, providing privacy, and giving the building a unique presence on the street.
This sketch provided the initial idea for the building.
Sketch translated to measured drawings.
Condition of building meeting Steuben Street, The screen partially covers the sidewalk.
South elevation of the building model at 1" = 20'
Ultimately, it was determined that the focus of the M.Arch thesis would not be this parcel on the periphery, but the grander site bound by the infrastructure. Scrap pieces and unused laser cut pieces were used to create this.
